Boal is one of the classic white grapes of Madeira - sweeter than Verdelho, yet less so than Malvasia, Boal is a perfectly harmonious meio doce ‘medium-sweet’, possessing the ideal combination of elegance and richness. Ranging from tawny to tortoise shell in color, it’s redolent of dried fruit, barley sugar, crème brûlée and caramel. Full-bodied but checked by its natural tang of acidity; the finish is surprisingly dry and delineated. Extremely rare, there are currently just 15.5 ha under vine on the entire island. With a meal, pair with roasted nuts (especially walnuts) and blue-veined cheeses; pâtes and foie gras; seared venison, braised short rib; robust curry stews, and richer spicy Asian fare. For dessert try with crème brûlée, tarte tatin or a classic bolo de mel. Also great neat as digestif.
